Prominent American composer, organist, and music editor whose work resonated in the parlors and concert halls of the late 19th century.

John Francis Gilder was a prominent American composer, organist, and music editor whose work resonated in the parlors and concert halls of the late 19th century. He was the younger brother of Richard Watson Gilder — editor of The Century Magazine and a central literary figure of the Gilded Age.

His compositions and arrangements circulated widely through American sheet-music publishers, bringing the music of the era into countless homes. Though less publicly visible than his brother, John's contribution to the cultural soundscape of the Gilded Age was part of the broader Gilder family imprint on American arts and letters.
